National FOP Foundation Appeals for Aid for Victims of Hurricane Sandy11/05/2012
Chuck Canterbury, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, announced today that the National FOP Foundation would launch an effort to render aid to those who have been displaced by Hurricane Sandy, a storm that devastated large areas in the Middle Atlantic and Northeastern States.

"All of us have seen the pictures of devastation along the Jersey and Maryland shores, New York City, Connecticut and other areas hit hardest by this storm. Our hearts and prayers go out to those families," Canterbury said. "The magnitude of the destruction of Hurricane Sandy has left many homeless and in great need."

The National FOP Foundation's Disaster Relief Fund, which distributed over $1 million to more than 2,000 people left homeless by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and which came to the aid of those affected by the tornadoes that struck Joplin, MO and Birmingham, AL, is once again calling on its members and others to give.

"The law enforcement officers in the affected areas have been on the clock and in harm's way for days now," Canterbury said. "They helped to evacuate the citizens before landfall, have been working to bring rescue and recovery to those who need it in the wake of the storm. But this means that they are going without sleep, without seeing their own families. They may have lost their own homes or loved ones as a result of this hurricane. We want to help them."

The National FOP Foundation is already subsidizing the mobile kitchen unit, which is providing hot meals and water, which was dispatched by Jerrard F. Young District of Columbia Lodge #1 and is manned by volunteers for DC #1. Members from the Florida State Lodge, who are well-acquainted with hurricane response and recovery efforts, have also sent a contingent of volunteers to the area to assist.

"And more help is on the way," said Canterbury. "When a citizen calls for help, an officer will respond. Our officers have called for help now, and we will not let them down."

Donations to the National FOP Foundation can be sent to 701 Marriott Dr., Nashville TN 37214. Every penny donated will go to help a victim of Hurricane Sandy.
